School Safety

Keeping your children safe during school is a top priority at Allegan Public Schools. The tools and resources on this page help keep our learning environments safe.

In addition to our own safety measures, we comply with the State of Michigan School Safety Requirements. These include a number of drills throughout the year.

Fire Drills (5 required)

Students and parents are encouraged to review our Student Technology Handbook, which explains the District’s technology use policies and answers questions you may have. Students and parents are required to sign a Technology Acceptable Use Policy Agreement prior to being given access to our network or a school computer.

Tornado Drills (2 required)

Procedures:

  • Students are evacuated from the building.
  • Students and staff proceed to designated assembly location.
  • Attendance is taken to ensure all students are present.
  • Students and staff remain in designated assembly are until “All Clear” is given.

Lock Down / Shelter in Place Drills (3 required)

Procedures:

  • Students are gathered inside the building, if outdoors.
  • Attendance is verified, if possible.
  • Students follow the directions of their teacher or principal.
  • During Lock Down: Hallways are evacuated. Students remain in classrooms with doors and windows shut and locked. Lights are turned off. All occupants are moved away from windows and doors (out of sight) until “All Clear” is given via intercom.
  • During Shelter in Place: Instruction, class changes, and all normal indoor activities continue as scheduled, unless otherwise directed via intercom announcements. Normal security procedures will be followed at each building affected, but with a heightened alert status.

Additional information: At least one Lock Down Drill must occur during either lunch, recess, or some other time when a significant number of students are not in their classrooms.

Unscheduled Lock Down Drills

If, during the course of the school day, local law enforcement agencies inform the administration of a threat or potential threat in the vicinity of any of our schools, there could be an unscheduled Lock Down / Shelter in Place in any or all of our school buildings. Students and staff will follow the procedures for Lock Down or Shelter in Place but may have other specific restrictions and/or recommendations for individual buildings. Although we will make every attempt not to interrupt the educational process, safety is our top priority. Communication to parents about these events will depend on law enforcement recommendations surrounding their investigations. Therefore, detailed notifications may be delayed until all facts are confirmed and the threat is eradicated. As always, parents are allowed to pick their child up from school, as they wish, unless a Lock Down is in place.
